LTSIG Pre-conference Event - Challenges and limitations in MALL

19th March 2012

As more learners come to class equipped with mobile devices, the idea of taking advantage of this inside and outside the classroom for Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) becomes an increasingly attractive idea.

Of course, there is a huge range of mobile devices that can be used for mobile learning, but in our PCE this year, we’ll be concentrating on handheld devices such as smartphones and tablet computers and considering how they are currently being used in language teaching and learning and what the future may hold. What are the challenges and the limitations of using these devices with learners?

We will be doing this, as we have done in previous LTSIG PCEs, using a combination of practical hands-on sessions; time for reflective discussion; and presentations from guest speakers such as Neil Ballantyne, the British Council’s Mobile Learning Manager; Gavin Dudeney and Nicky Hockly of the Consultants-E; Gary Motteram, Senior Lecturer of the School of Education, University of Manchester; and Paul Sweeney, Director of the consultancy Eduworlds Knowledge.

Some of the areas of ELT we intend to explore include Everything you wanted to know about MALL but were afraid to ask; Mobile learning inside and outside of the classroom; The effects of the ‘app gap’ ; Teacher education and mobile learning. We would also like to encourage some of our participants to volunteer for the ‘Case Studies’ part of the day, which aims to showcase how teachers currently use MALL.  If you are involved in MALL and would like take part in the PCE, please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. The timetable and full details of the event are available here or can be downloaded as a pdf file here.
