What is the CALL Review?

The CALL Review (CALL = Computer Assisted Language Learning) is the journal, or newsletter, of the IATEFL Learning Technologies (formerly Computer) SIG.

How can I contribute to the CALL Review?

Content

Articles should be something between 800 and 3000 words (max). Please include a digital photo (if you would like to), biodata (as brief as possible), and a short abstract of the article to appear on the SIG Web site.

Format

Papers should be sent as email attachments in any popular word processor format or as a PDF file.
Any graphics should be sent as separate files (.jpg, .tif or .bmp).

Didn't the CALL Review used to be called MUESLI News?

Yes. The CALL Review used to be called MUESLI News, the newsletter of MUESLI (Micro Users in ESL Institutions), itself the original incarnation of the Learning Technology's previous incarnation as the Computer SIG. The first edition of MUESLI News, edited by David Eastment, was published in October 1984.

In the spring of 1987, the MUESLI user group became an IATEFL SIG.

In July 1994, the name MUESLI News was changed to CALL Review.

Subsequently (anyone know the exact date?), the MUESLI user group itself had a name change to Computer SIG.

How can I get current editions of the CALL Review?

The CALL Review is only available to members of IATEFL who have elected to belong to the Learning Technology (formerly Computer) Special Interest Group. Membership of IATEFL is straightforward, and brings additional benefits, including the main IATEFL Newsletter and a variety of publications at preferential rates. Previous editions: on CD-ROM

Previous editions of the CALL Review newsletter, known previously as MUESLI News, from 1984-1995, are available in cross-platform PDF form on a CD-ROM, formatted for both Windows and Macintosh computers. This CD-ROM is sent to new Computer SIG members free of charge.

Previous editions: online at the Computer SIG website

From autumn 2004, previous editions of the Learning Technology (formerly Computer) SIG newsletter, more than 2 years old, will be available online at this website.

This archive resource is being "kick-started" with files from the 2002 CD-ROM, consisting of 30 editions from the years 1984-1995. It is intended that other editions will be added as they become available, until all/most back editions are online.

The newsletters will be freely downloadable, as Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files. To read the files, you will need to use a PDF reader, such as the free Adobe Reader, available for many platforms, including Linux, Macintosh and Windows. (It is very likely that you already have such a program installed.)

Note on folder pathways

The PDF file "contents.pdf" is the Contents Page, and is the best way to navigate the newsletter files. But to get the links to and from the Contents page PDF file, the individual newsletter PDF files, and the other PDF files, to all function correctly, you need to make sure that the files are configured in the following way:

• (Top level) The folder where you keep all these files, named e.g. "CompSIGnewsletters" should contain:
• (Second level) "back to the future.pdf", "contents.pdf", "editions and editors.pdf", "preface.pdf", "resurrection man.pdf", and a folder called "pdf-files"
• (Third level) The folder "pdf-files" should contain all the newsletter files, "MN-84-10.pdf", "MN-85-05.pdf", etc.
